Shootout at the ‘Ville’ – Russell Smith

On July 30-August 1, 29 shooters convened at BSC for the Shootout at the ‘Ville’.  This was an NSSA sanctioned 5-gun skeet shoot.

The weather was hot, but the shooting was hotter.  By way of example, in one squad of the 20 gauge, the low score 98.  On that same squad in the .410 event, the low man posted a 96.  Hot shooting, indeed.

The shoot started with the doubles event and Josh Guess was the winner.

Robbie Robinson & Garrett Hendrickson shot off 100’s for the 12-gauge championship, with Garrett coming out on top.

Ally Robinson won the 20-gauge event outright with the lone 100, her first in registered competition.

The 28-gauge event was decided in a 5-way shoot-off of 99’s, with Derrick Morgan besting all others.

The .410 was also settled with a shoot-off 99’s with Josh Guess the winner.

Josh Guess emerged as the HOA winner with a super 396. Ally Robinson was runner-up with a 395.

I received lots of compliments on a well-run shoot.  It went off well, but it’s not a one-man show, let me assure you. Our success was due to the tons of help from BSC members.

Before the shoot began, James Rupprecht had the grounds in spectacular condition.  Of course, you’d expect the grass to be mowed, which it was.  Additionally, though, James edged all the walkways and pads, as well as removing all target debris.  The fields were noticeably clean and tidy.

Ray Vaslavsky kept the scoreboard, even posting scores mid-event to keep shooters and spectator’s current.  More importantly, Ray did the all the work of setting up the shoot-offs.  No small feat, let me tell you.

Red Miller and Jack Murphy were on hand both days to fill the traps between rotations.  Billy Mike Friend arranged for lunch both days.  Ben Beeman did a little tree trimming.

Rick Austin and Clark Donnell just did whatever their hands found to do.  I saw them carrying trash and taking water and ice to the coolers, for sure, and probably other activities that I didn’t notice.  Someone policed the fields Saturday evening, picking up discarded hulls.

As we were closing Sunday evening, Helen Vaslavsky and Jami Robinson tidied up the clubhouse, sweeping the floor and putting away things we had dragged out of the supply closet.

Thank you to all who helped, in any way, to make the Shootout at the ‘Ville’ a success.

And, finally, a huge thank you to BSC members who showed up to watch the shooting.  It is a lift to have a supportive gallery.
